Redhawks Open Guilford Tournament With 72-58 Win Over Meredith

GREENSBORO, NC -- The La Roche women's basketball team opened the Daly Seven Tip-Off Classic with a 72-58 victory over Meredith College. Meredith is located in Raleigh, North Carolina and plays in the USA South Conference.

The Redhawks will play host Guilford College tomorrow at 2pm. Guilford has appeared in the past two NCAA Tournaments.

La Roche never trailed after the 5:43 minute of the first quarter. Meredith enjoyed a hot start and led 8-3 before Darrian Johnson drained a three. Two minutes later, Jenna Cole hit a three pointer and then Cole hit a pair of free throws for the Redhawks first lead. La Roche ended the quarter on a 6-0 run and led 19-13 after the first.

The Redhawks continued to shoot the ball well as they built their lead up to sixteen in the second quarter. Cole, Nicole Boda and Nia Thomas hit threes in the quarter and La Roche shot 50% from long range in the first half. The Redhawks also shot 44% from the field and entered intermission with a 36-22 advantage.

Jazmyne Boyd hit a jumper as La Roche stretched the lead back to sixteen early in the second half. Meredith cut it back to just seven but Johnson responded with a three-pointer and a free throw to bring it back to double digits. Boda hit a three late in the fourth quarter and the Redhawks carried a 55-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Meredith cut it back to eight late in the fourth but the Redhawks made their free throws down the stretch and went on for the 72-58 victory.

Cole scored a game-high 21 points to go along with 7 rebounds. She went 3 for 3 from long distance and hit 8 of 9 free throws. Johnson had 15 points and Thomas 9 points.

La Roche went 9 for 18 from three-point range and shot 46% from the field.
