Softball Swept in Season Opener Doubleheader

McCANDLESS, Pa. - LRU dropped both games Thursday afternoon in their season opening doubleheader at home vs. Pitt Greensburg. The Bobcats took game one 9-1 and game two 19-13.

Game 1

How it Happened

Freshman Ashtin Hoover tripled in the bottom of the first for her first collegiate hit. Then, Brandi Clyde knocked her in on an RBI double to put the Redhawks up 1-0. Unfortunatley, that would be the only run LRU would score.

Pitt Greensburg put up nine unanswered runs after the first, scoring seven of them in the final two innings of the game.

Inside the Box Score

Alexa Young pitched a complete game for the Redhawks. She recorded two strikeouts and a walk.

UPG out-hit LRU 20-3.

Game 2

How it Happened

The Bobcats exploded for six runs in the top of the first. LRU fought their way back in the top of the second. Meghan Haynes scored on a wild pitch and then Kelly Denk drove in two runs on an RBI single to pull the Redhawks within three.

In the bottom of the third, Alexis Myers scored on an error and Kylee Greig hit an RBI single. LRU trailed 7-5.

In the bottom of the fourth, Alexis Myers hit an RBI single.

In the fifth, Ashtin Hoover hit an RBI double and Devan Smith hit an RBI single to put LRU up 9-8, their first lead of the contest.

UPG would then score 11 unanswered runs to go up 19-9. In the bottom of the seventh, the Redhawks showed their resilence by scoring four runs but ultimatley came up short.

Inside the Box Score

Ashtin Hoover, Meghan Haynes and Brandi Clyde all had three hits.

Four Redhawks had multiple RBI (Kelly Denk, Ashtin Hoover, Devan Smith & Alexis Myers).

LRU had 16 hits and 11 RBI.

LRU softball's next doubleheader is this Saturday, April 10th at home vs. Medaille. Game one starts at 1:00 p.m.
