Altoona Hangs On For Sweep at La Roche

Penn State Altoona 3 La Roche 2 (8 innings) 

Starting pitcher Alexa Young cruised through the first three innings. She threw a perfect first inning and then left runners on in the second and third.

The Redhawks managed to get runners on in the first three innings but they could not take advantage. 

Altoona broke up the no-hit bid with a bunt single in the fourth. They then dragged a bunt to open the scoring and a 1-0 lead. 

Young got out of a two-on and two-out jam in the top of the seventh to keep the Redhawks alive. Devin Smith came up with the big hit, driving in Emily Samluk to send it into extras. 

Altoona plated two runs in the top of the eighth. 

Denk singled to advance Calloway to third and then a double steal got the Redhawks within one. La Roche had runners on the corners but Altoona ended up holding on.

Samluk, Smith, and Denk each finished with two hits. Smith hit in a run while Calloway and Samluk scored.

Young allowed just two runs over eight innings.

Altoona scored a run each in the first, second, and fourth innings.

The Redhawks left the bases loaded in the third inning, but struck for a run in the fourth. Samluk doubled, advanced to third on a Grassmyer sac bunt, and took home on a Samantha Hunter sac fly.

Calloway made a terrific diving catch to get the first out of the fifth inning. Thom made a basket catch to close the sixth.

Grassmyer left an Altoona runner at third base to keep the Redhawks within striking distance.

La Roche had the tying run at the plate but Altoona held on.

Grassmyer allowed just 2 earned runs over 7 innings. Calloway got on base three times and stole a base. Hunter hit in a run and Samluk scored.
