Smith Walks It Off As Redhawks Split With D'Youville

The Redhawks capped a succesful day with a Devan Smith 2-run double to walk if off against D'Youville. La Roche avenged a 3-0 Game 1 loss with a 6-5 extra inning victory in Game 2. The Redhawks improved to 8-18 overall and 3-7 in the AMCC.

The Redhawks advanced runners into scoring position in the bottom of the first, but the inning ended when La Roche was thrown out at third. 

Starting pitcher Alexa Young cruised through the first two innings. She struck out the side in the first and then let just one baserunner to reach in the second.

D'Youville used a leadoff triple to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. 

Young continued to limit D'Youville, but the Redhawk bats went cold and the Spartans added runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Young threw a complete game, allowing just 2 earned runs while striking out 6 batters.

Devan Smith and Emily Samluk provided hits.

 

La Roche 6 D'Youville 5 (8 innings)

Starting pitcher Kaylee Grassmyer tossed 1-2-3 first and second innings. The Redhawk offense backed her with a run in the bottom of the the first. Dayna Calloway advanced all the way to third base on an error and Kelly Denk drove her home for a 1-0 lead after one.

D'Youville tied it in the top of the third but Grassmyer left a Spartan at second to end the inning.

The Redhawks grabbed the lead in the bottom of the inning. Smith drew a leadoff walk and took third on a Calloway single to center. Denk registered her second RBI of the game for a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans tied it with a triple in the fifth. An error allowed them to take the lead two batters later.

D'Youville made a terrific play to double up the Redhawks in the bottom of the fifth.

La Roche tied it in the sixth. Medva hit a leadoff single and worked her way around the bases on an error and a wild pitch. Brandi Clyde then laid down a bunt and Medva broke home to tie it at 3-3.

The Spartans took the lead in the top of the seventh but the Redhawks answered to tie it in the bottom of the inning. Calloway kept the inning alive with a single and Denk drove her in to tie it.

D'Youville grabbed the lead in the top of the eighth, which set up the heroics for Smith in the bottom of the inning.

Ordos started the inning on second and advanced to third on a Samluk sac bunt. Young walked and Hunter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Smith came through, lining a double into center to give the Redhawks the victory.

Denk hit in three, Smith two, and Clyde one. Calloway scored twice while Medva, Smith, Ordos, and Young scored runs.

Young earned the win.
