Softball Splits With Chatham in Home Opener

Chatham scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 in the top of the first.The Redhawks responded in the bottom of the inning.

Devan Smith roped a triple over the right fielder's head to lead off the bottom of the first. Dayna Calloway reached on a fielder's choice and Kelly Denk was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.

An error allowed the Redhawks to tie it, and Kayla Ordos roped a triple into center to clear the bases.

Chatham laid down a bunt in the third inning to cut the deficit in half. They added a run in the sixth inning, but Dayna Calloway made a diving catch to preserve a run.

Alexa Young threw a scoreless seventh inning to earn the 4-3 win.

Young improved to 2-2 with the victory. She allowed just three runs and scattered five hits over seven innings. She struck out five batters and did not allow a walk.

Ordos hit in three while Smith, Calloway, Denk, and Medva scored runs.

Chatham scored three unearned runs to start the first, but Medva held it to just three with a sliding grab.

The Redhawks answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning. Devan Smith tripled to the wall and two batters later Denk reached on a fielder's choice. Brandi Clyde drove in both with a bloop single into left.

Chatham struck for three more in the top of the second.

Kaylee Grassmyer entered in relief and settled things down. She allowed just one run over the next three innings and picked off a runner at third base.

The Redhawks got to work in the fifth inning, scoring twice. Denk extended the inning, reaching on an error. Medva tripled home Denk and then advance home on a wild pitch.

Chatham struck for two in the sixth. Grassmyer left Cougar runners at the corners in the top of the seventh, but the Redhawks were unable to find a run in the bottom of the inning.

Clyde drove in two while Denk scored twice and swiped a base. Medva tripled, drove in a run, and scored.
