Softball Splits at Penn State Altoona, Devan Smith Has Five RBIs

ALTOONA, PA – La Roche College softball split a double-header at Penn State Altoona on Friday afternoon. It was a tale of two games. La Roche outpowered Penn State Altoona 16-9 in Game 1 and dropped a pitcher's duel 1-0 in Game 2.

Game 1:

La Roche broke out the bats to win Game One 16-9. They registered 19 hits and 15 RBIs.

Penn State Altoona held a 4-1 lead but the Redhawks took control with ten runs in the top of the fourth.

Savannah Leonard and Kelsey Bayer reached and Devan Smith got La Roche on the board with an RBI single to left. Sydnee DeShong followed with a walk and Bayer advanced home on an error for a 4-3 deficit.

Aubrie Martin came to bat two batters later and with the bases juiced. Martin came through with a bases clearing double to give the Redhawks their first lead of the game. A walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases again and Bayer drew a walk for a 6-4 advantage.

Devan Smith cleared the bases with a 3-run single up the right field line. Meghan Haynes added an RBI single to right as the Redhawks led 11-4 after four innings.

Bayer and Devan Smith added RBIs in the fifth inning and Burford scored on an error in the sixth. Burford and Andie Lippman provided insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Leonard earned the win. Devan Smith hit in five while Martin and Bayer had 3 RBIs. Plato and Leonard scored three runs.

Game 2:

Pitcher Alexa Smith had a strong performance in the late game. She allowed just one run over seven innings. The lone run coming on an RBI single in the first inning.

The Redhawks managed just one hit, but they threatened with runners in scoring position in the second, third and seventh innings. Their best chance came with runners on second and third with one out in the second inning. Penn State Altoona got a lineout to third and doubled up La Roche to keep the one run lead.

Young struck out three over seven innings. Haynes provided a double.
