Softball Splits Pair With Medaille

PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche College softball improved to 10-8 on the season and 4-2 in conference after splitting with Medaille 4-3 (L), 9-2 (W) on Saturday afternoon. The Redhawks played as the visitors and were the first team to bat.

Game 1:

Alexa Young tossed a perfect first inning and Kelsey Bayer made a terrific catch in foul territory to end the second.

Kelsey Plato singled in the fourth inning and advanced all the way to third on an error by the centerfielder. Kelsey Bayer gave the Redhawks a 1-0 lead with a seeing eye single to score Plato.

Medaille took a 2-1 lead with a 2-run single in the fourth inning. They added two more with a 2-run double in the fifth inning. La Roche limited the damage with a double play with Devan Smith snagging a line out and flipping it to Meghan Haynes.

La Roche made it a 4-3 game in the top of the sixth. Aubrie Martin and Plato were hit by pitches. Two straight Redhawks struck out, but the left fielder misplayed a Savannah Leonard liner to allow Martin and Plato to score.

Young got Medaille to chase a pitch to leave runners on the corner in the sixth inning. The Redhawks went hitless and Medaille held on.

Plato scored twice and Bayer had two hits. Young lost her first career game.

Game 2:

Starter Savannah Leonard opened with two scoreless frames and the Redhawks offense backed her up with 4 runs in the second inning.

Plato drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a Bayer single. Leonard helped her cause with a 2-run single into left field. Michaela Geracia advanced home on an error for a three run lead. Devan Smith slid under a tag on a Haynes swinging bunt for a 4-0 lead after two innings.

Medaille got one back in the second and another in the third. In the fourth, Savannah Leonard picked up a big strikeout to leave the bases loaded.

The Redhawks grabbed the momentum and struck for two more runs in the fifth. Burford led off with a triple and Lippman reached on a fielder's choice. Martin put the Redhawks up 8-2 with a double into centerfield.

Devan Smith beat out an infield single to go up 9-2 in the seventh inning. The Redhawks went on to win by that score.

Leonard had a solid game in the batter's box and on the mound. She allowed just two runs over seven innings and also hit in three. Plato scored three runs.
