N. MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- The Redhawks went 1-1 on opening day. They fell to Eastern Mennonite 11-1 in the early game. They young Redhawks responded by cruising to an 11-1 victory over Lehman in the late game.

The Redhawks opened the season with an 11-1 loss to Eastern Mennonite. Eastern Mennonite had already played six games while La Roche was making their 2018 debut. 

Eastern Mennonite scored eight runs in the first inning and three more in the second inning. Pitcher Kaylee Grassmyer entered the game in relief in the second inning and shut down Eastern Mennonite. Grassmyer tossed two scoreless innings and allowed just three baserunners.

Aubriatta Martin provided the offense. She blasted a home run into right-centerfield to break up a fourth inning no hitter.

Kelsey Bayer doubled and Devan Smith registered her first career hit. Devan Smith also swiped a bag.

The Redhawks looked in midseason form as they cruised to an 11-1 victory over Lehman in the late game.

Alexa Young made a statement in her first collegiate start. She struck out the first four batters and did not allow a hit until the third inning. She ran into trouble in the fourth inning with runners on first and third and one out, but she struck out the final two batters and left the inning unscathed.

The Redhawks' offense was equally as impressive as they put up ten runs over the first two innings. Martin opened the scoring, singling up the middle to score Ashley Burford. Martin scored on a passed ball and Meghan Haynes doubled to center to score Savannah Leonard.

La Roche put up seven runs in the second inning. Bayer and Athena Smith reached base and Burford singled home Bayer for a 4-0 lead. Athena Smith scored on a passed ball and a Martin line drive got Burford home. Martin stole her way around the diamond while Leonard, Haynes, and Alexis Medva scored on errors. Kelsey Plato added a run in the fourth inning for an 11-0 lead.

Young threw four innings to earn her first collegiate victory. She gave up just three hits and no runs while striking out seven. Autumn Armijo was solid in relief, giving up just one run on one hit in an inning of work.

Burford, Martin and Haynes all had two hits, while Burford, Martin and Leonard scored two runs. Martin also hit in a pair.
