Late Goal Lifts W&J to Victory Over Visiting Redhawks

Washington, PA -- Washington & Jefferson climbed ahead with a late goal and held on to defeat the visiting Redhawks 2-1 on Wednesday evening.

The Redhawks rebounded nicely from their Saturday defeat against Carnegie Mellon. La Roche came out with a plan to attack and they snuck through the W&J defense for a pair of scoring chances in the opening two minutes.

A majority of the pressure came from the Redhawks' backline with Ty Savochka and Nick Shaw stepping up with shots. La Roche was held off the board in the first half but goalkeeper Austin Gorman and the Redhawk defense kept W&J scoreless.

La Roche broke the scoreless tie five minutes into the second half. Firas Abduljawad found a crack in the W&J defense and set up Dante Nicholas for a 1-0 Redhawk lead.

Gorman posted two straight saves but W&J's Joseph Feola found the bottom left corner of the net for the equalizer in the sixty-seventh minute. Gorman turned away the next two shots, but Feola netted the game-winner with just two minutes left in regulation.

Nicholas' goal gives him a team-best two on the season. Abduljawad takes the Redhawk lead in assists with two.
