Redhawks Cruise in Conference Opener, Defeat D'Youville 5-1

BUFFALO, NY -- The La Roche men's soccer team cruised to a conference opening win on Saturday. The Redhawks traveled to Buffalo and came back with a 5-1 victory over D'Youville.

Goalkeeper Austin Gorman made two big saves before Firas Abduljawad broke the shutout with a goal in the thirty-fifth minute. It looked as if the Redhawks would enter halftime with a one goal advantage but Tom Spagnolo set up Shayne Rhodes in the forty-third minute and his first career goal.

La Roche had barely left the locker room when they took a 3-0 lead. Ty Antonelli struck for the first time in his career registering a goal from his defensive spot. Pedro Ansede moved into seventh on the Redhawks' all-time scoring list and ninth on their points list with a tally in the sixty-seventh minute. Hugo Arroyo set up Ansede's strike for his first collegiate point. Just seven minutes later, Ansede helped the Redhawks stretch their lead to five by setting up Ximo Vicent. Vicent moved into eighth on La Roche's all-time points list with the goal.

D'Youville broke the shutout with a goal in the eighty-seventh minute.

La Roche outshot the Spartans 16-13 and 10-8 in shots on goal. Gorman made five saves.

Men's soccer will travel to Penn State Altoona on Tuesday night. Game time is 6pm.
