Redhawks Top Mt. Aloysius in AMCC Game of the Week

PITTSBURGH, PA – The Redhawks held on in the AMCC Game of the Week, charging down the stretch to a 71-62 victory over Mt. Aloysius. La Roche remains undefeated in conference at 6-0 and improve to 11-2 on the season.

Mt. Aloysius opened on an 8-3 run, but Zach Gould buried a three falling down to get the Redhawks back within two. RayQuan Phifer drew a charge to change possession and after a Mountie free throw, Austin Hannes tied it with a three.

Darrell Barron denied a Mountie basket, drawing contact on the opposite end for the second charge in as many minutes.

Mt. Aloysius dominated the boards to give the Redhawks fits early. La Roche stayed in the game with their ability to score from distance. Five of La Roche's first six baskets came by way of the long ball.

La Roche stepped up defensively, forcing Mt. Aloysius into two straight shot clock violations near the five minute mark of the first half. Ryan Norkus got the Redhawks within one with a transition hook shot. Tyler Frederick converted a three point play late in the half and La Roche entered intermission ahead 29-25.

Mt. Aloysius held a 24-14 first half rebounding edge but the Redhawks turned the ball over just once.

Coach Carmichael drew up a play to start the second half and the Redhawks ran it to perfection for a Norkus bucket. The Mounties scored four straight to tie it, but Frederick found Norkus cutting through the lane for a 33-31 lead with 17:08 left in regulation.

Norkus continued to carry the Redhawk offense, converting a three-point play at the 15:49 mark. La Roche forced the Mounties into their third shot clock violation of the game on the ensuing possession.

Frederick drew charges on straight possessions and La Roche carried the momentum to a 6-1 run. Barron contributed three points and Phifer capped the run with a reverse layup.   

The Mounties tied it at 49-49 but Frederick came right back and drilled a three with 7:48 left in the half. Both teams continued to battle, with Norkus alternating three-pointers with Mt. Aloysius.

Phifer picked off a pass with the Redhawks ahead 60-59 and 4:18 left. La Roche hustled down the floor and Gould found Frederick for an easy score.

The Mounties tied it with a three, but Phifer cut through the lane and dished it to Gould for a 65-62 lead with three and a half minutes remaining. Gould gave the Redhawks a cushion with a three pointer on the following possession.  

La Roche blocked two shots on the next possession and Frederick and Gould converted free throws.

Four Redhawks scored in double figures including Norkus who had a team-high 15 points. Gould had 13 points, Frederick 12 points, and Phifer 10 points.

Mt. Aloysius dominated the boards but the Redhawks committed just five turnovers and hit 10 three-pointers.
