Kryz Scores 19 as Redhawks Roll Past Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, PA -- Caden Kryz scored a game-high 19 points as the Redhawks rolled past Carnegie Mellon 78-60. La Roche wins their fourth straight and improves to 4-1 on the season.

Kryz hit 5 three-pointers on his way to 19 points. Zach Gould (13 points), Tyler Frederick (11 points), and Austin Hannes (10 points) all reached double figures. Ryan Norkus grabbed 11 rebounds and Kennedy Smith dished out 4 assists. La Roche held a 47-33 edge on the boards. 

The Redhawks dominated the glass early. Ryan Norkus positioned himself to pick up four rebounds over the first ten minutes. Zach Gould found his way inside to grab three boards in the early going.

La Roche received solid bench play with Caden Kryz and Shawn Dunnings getting involved in the first half. The Redhawks led by as many as nine points in the first half, but the Tartans found the hot hand to get back to within four. 

Gould drew a charge to halt CMU momentum. Kryz buried a three on the opposite end and Kennedy Smith followed with a layup to go back up 32-23 with three minutes left in the half.

Dunnings and Smith rejected Tartan layups and the Redhawks entered halftime with a 36-31 lead. Kryz had 8 first half points and La Roche had a thirteen rebound edge on the boards.

Tyler Frederick opened the second half hitting a hook shot. Kryz' hot shooting extended past halftime as he drained three threes midway through the second. 

Darrell Barron rejected a shot at 52-37 with 10:46 left. Kryz was feeling it and knocked down a step back three from the corner at the 7:42 mark.

Gould found Hannes for a three with 4:21 left and the Redhawks went on to earn the win.

Next up: The Redhawks return to conference play on Wednesday and will travel to Pitt-Greensburg.
