Offense Makes Progress, Defense Fails Redhawks In Loss to Methodist 78-73

The Redhawks men's basketball team came up short this evening in their second game of the Marietta Shrine Tournament against Methodist 78-73. A lackluster start to the game by the young Redhawks put them behind 12-3 within minutes of the opening tip. The game settle in for the middle of the first half as shots started to fall but the defensive effort fell short. Redhawk sophomore forward Arnes Bajgora and his counterpart for Methodist Brandon Monk each carried their respective teams in the first half with 11 pts for Bajgora and 7pts for Monk.  Evan Bonnaure, Jared Richardson, and Andy Abreu hit big three pointers to close that half as the Redhawks chipped away at the Monarchs early lead to make the 38-30 at halftime.

After intermission the Redhawks tried to continue to cut into the lead as accountability and composure moments filtered the second half of play. It was with a three pointer by Bonnaure (14:10) which cut the score to 52-48 did the game and momentum start to feel like it was going in the Redhawks favor. Intensity on the defensive end plus key rebounds over the next five minutes with the bench providing a spark earned their first lead at 64-62 (7:05).

A change by the Monarchs down the stretch to a zone defense and a handful of defensive breakdowns however became too much for the Redhawks to overcome as they fell 78-73 and remain winless on their young season at 0-3. Coach Carmichael with his thoughts after the game shares "We need to start punching teams in the mouth first. We are proud of our teams fights and togetherness to battle back in the game, but we need to put it together for a full game. We have all the ingredients we need to find the correct receipt."

Arnes Bajgora led the way on the offensive end finishing his night with 27 pts and 6rebs as he was named to the Marietta Shrine All Tournament Team. Evan Bonnaure continued his strong start to the season with 14 pts, 4 rbs, and 5 ast. The Redhawks as a whole had their most complete game of the season on the offensive end shooting 46% from the floor. Methodist scored to many points in the paint (40) and outrebounded the Redhawks by 10 (36-26)which contributed to their 52% field goal percentage as a team.

The Redhawks and their schedule continue away from home on Monday November 22, 2015 when they will visit Meadville (Pa) and Theil College in a rematch of a 65-56 Theil win last year.
