Preview: Baseball Host Alfred St. for AMCC Semifinal

The La Roche University baseball team will take on Alfred State College at home on Thursday, May 14th and Saturday May 15th (if necessary) in a best-of-three game series. Games one and two will be played on Thursday with a 1:00 p.m. start time.

La Roche News and Notes

  • The Redhawks improved to 17-1 on the season last Saturday with a two-game sweep over Medaille College in the AMCC Quarterfinals. LRU outscored the Mavericks 17-1 between both games and led for the duration of both contests.
  • In game one, senior starting pitcher Jake Seymour pitched his fifth complete game of the season, got his fourth shutout and improved to 6-0. In 7.0 innings pitched, Seymour posted 10 strikeouts, three walks, two hits and no earned runs. The AMCC Pitcher of the Week has given up just two earned runs in 41.0 innings pitched this season. His 0.44 ERA is the best in the conference and 10th in NCAA D-III.
  • In game two, Tristan Tinney got the start on the mound in and moved to 5-0 on the season. In 5.0 innings pitched, Tinney posted a career-high 11 strikeouts, one walk, two hits and no earned runs.
  • La Roche went 22-62 (.355) at the plate in the quarterfinals. As a team, the Redhawks have a .365 batting average this season, which ranks first in the conference and fifth in the country.
  • LRU's pitching rotation has a 1.88 cumulative ERA, ranking first in the AMCC and second in NCAA D-III. The Redhawks WHIP (1.00) ranks first in the conference and fifth in NCAA D-III and their strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.57) ranks first in the conference and seventh in NCAA D-III.
  • La Roche leads the AMCC in slugging percentage (.564, 5th in NCAA), on base percentage (.445, 13th in NCAA), doubles per game (2.9, 9th in NCAA), scoring (9.6 runs/game, 19th in NCAA) and home runs per game (1.00, 36th in NCAA).
  • The Redhawks fielding has been exceptional. The white and red's .979 fielding percentage ranks first in the conference and second in NCAA D-III. LRU has committed just 12 fielding errors this season.

Alfred State News and Notes

  • Alfred State advanced to the AMCC semifinals for the first time in school history with a 17-9 victory over Penn State Altoona on Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers won the best of three series two games to one.
  • Brody Burdett finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Henby was 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Josh Laurie was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Matteo Avallone finished 2-for-5 with a RBI.
  • Jon White and Chris Catoire both tossed four innings for the Pioneers. White went the first four and allowed eight hits and three earned runs while walking two and striking out one. Catoire allowed five hits and four earned runs while walking four and striking out four. Chris Baldwin pitched a 1-2-3, 9th inning to close out the contest.
  • The Pioneers were the only team in the AMCC to defeat La Roche during the regular season. On April 28th, the Redhawks split with Alfred State on the road. La Roche defeated ASC in game one 5-2 but the Pioneers took game two 7-4. La Roche had just 11 hits combined in the doubleheader, their fewest in a two game stretch this season.
  • In conference play, Alfred state ranks third in team ERA (4.63), third in total runs (129), second in stolen bases (35), fourth in extra base hits (50), and third in fielding percentage (.973).
  • The Pioneers best player is Matteo Avallone. Avallone leads the team in batting average (.413), RBI (38), doubles (17), homeruns (9) and is second in runs scored (32). Avallone ranks first in the conference in total hits, doubles, homeruns and total bases.
  • Alfred State's ace on the mound is first year pitcher Chris Mattoon. Mattoon has a 3.27 ERA in conference play. In 22.0 innings pitcher, he has 18 strike-outs and four walks.
