W&J Tops #19 La Roche in Season-Opener

Washington, Pa. -- Baseball was looking to pull out 2 wins in their double header against Washington and Jefferson on Saturday but fell short. The Presidents were able to score 4 runs in each game and the Redhawks just couldn't match them, with no runs in the first game and 3 in the second.

W&J got to work early in Game 1 as two runs crossed home plate in the bottom of the first inning. Starter Tre Thomas settled down and followed with four scoreless innings, but the Redhawks were unable to even it up and the Presidents took in the early game.

La Roche got things going offensively in the late game. In the second inning, Jonathan Spina and Jay Novak reached base and Jonathan Melendez followed with a no-out single into centerfield. Dylan Urban then roped a singled into left field for a one run lead. Two batters later, Joe Professori hit a two-out single into left field for a 3-0 lead.

The Presidents answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a groundout, walk, foul out, and balk. W&J held on for the remainder of the game and the one run victory.

The three runs scored by the Redhawks came from Jay Novak, Jonathan Spina, and Johnathan Melendez. Joe Professori and Dylan Urban were able to both put up RBIs to give La Roche a boost.

Tre Thomas provided the Redhawks with a quality start in the early game. Thomas went five innings and allowed just two runs and five hits while striking out eight batters. Travis Holman threw five scoreless innings of relief in game 2.

Redhawk baseball is back in action over spring break in Florida against 5 teams in the Snowbird Classic.
