#21 Redhawks Sweep Mt. Aloysius, Take One Game Lead in AMCC

PITTSBURGH, PA – #21 La Roche College Baseball picked up a pair of wins, sweeping Mt. Aloysius 11-3, 11-5 on Friday afternoon. The Redhawks improve to 21-6-1 and stay atop the AMCC at 10-2.

Game 1:

Dylan Urban gunned out a runner trying to advance to third base and Tre Thomas picked a Mountie off at first base to end the opening frame. The Redhawks left runners at second and third in the bottom of the inning.

Thomas used a strikeout to get out of the second inning and La Roche grabbed the lead in the bottom of the inning. Phil Pieto broke up a double play and Johnathan Melendez slid around a tag at home for the game's first runs. Joe Professori followed with a 2-out single up the middle to score Pieto and Jon Spina.

Thomas picked another off in the fourth and got a popout to leave runners at first and second base.

La Roche tacked on a pair in the bottom of the fourth. Spina was hit by a pitch and scored on a Professori single up the middle. Professori scored three batters later on a Jay Novak single to left field.

Mt. Aloysius cut it to 5-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth. Jake Seymour needed just six pitches to get through the seventh.

La Roche added four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dylan Urban singled in Spina while a Novak single to left scored a pair. Following a pitching change, Gino Quahliero found the right field gap for an RBI double.

Josh Kuderian came in relief in the seventh.

Thomas improved to 6-0 after tossing four shutout innings. Professori and Novak each hit in three and Spina scored three runs.

Game 2:

Cam Smith stranded a pair of runners in the top of the first and La Roche plated two runs in the bottom of the inning. Professori tripled to right and Urban added an RBI triple for a 1-0 lead. Urban scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

Smith left two more on base in the second. Melendez and Quahliero reached and advance into scoring position in the bottom of the inning. Hoffman followed with an RBI groundout and Christian Hirt a sac fly for a 4-0 lead.

Novak recorded all three outs in the top of the third and Urban added a run in the bottom of the inning.

Hoffman singled home Melendez to extend the Redhawks' lead in the fourth. Spina provided an infield hit to score Hoffman and Hirt stole home for an 8-0 lead after four innings.

Mt. Aloysius got two back in the fifth and one more in the sixth. La Roche answered with a run in the seventh and a pair in the eighth. Novak doubled in Urban while Spina and Professori added RBIs.

The Mounties scored twice in the ninth, but the Redhawks earned the 11-5 victory.

Smith earned the win, allowing just two earned runs over five innings. Urban scored three runs while Hoffman, Hirt, and Melendez had two runs. Spina and Hoffman each had 2 RBIs.
