Thomas Strikes Out 11 As Redhawks Sweep Medaille

PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche College Baseball broke out to the bats to earn a double –header sweep on Saturday against Medaille 14-0, 13-10. The victory sets up a first place battle between La Roche and Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday.

Game 1:

Tre Thomas threw a perfect top of the first and the Redhawks took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Jon Spina led off with a single and scored on a Dylan Urban triple.

Thomas left runners on base in the second and third innings. La Roche tacked on another in the bottom of the third for a 2-0 lead. Elmo Trickett led off with a single and Spina followed with a single. Spina tried to advance to second base but got caught in a run down which allowed Trickett to score.

Roebuck singled and scored in the fourth inning. The Redhawks broke it open in the fifth inning.

Spina was hit by a pitch and scored on a Joe Professori single. Dylan Urban followed with a hit and Roebuck came through with a 2-run single. Novak doubled to the wall to advance runners to second and third. Jonathan Melendez tripled home Roebuck and Novak, with an Austin Hoffman sac fly making it 9-0 after five innings.

The Redhawks scored four more runs in the sixth inning. Jay Novak tripled in Roebuck and Angel Morales and scored on a Melendez double. Maddux Ryan followed with an RBI double and Trickett a 2-run single.

Melendez had three RBIs while Roebuck and Novak each had two. Roebuck scored three runs with Spina, Novak and Melendez providing two each.

Thomas was excellent on the mound. He tossed 6 scoreless innings to pick up his fourth win. He struck out a career-high 11 batters and walked none.

Game 2:

Cam Smith stranded runners at second and third to end the first. Christian Hirt provided the early scoring for the Redhawks. Melendez and Gino Quahliero reached base and Hirt sent a 2-out, 2-run double into left field for a 2-0 lead after two innings.

La Roche extended their lead in the third inning. Roebuck hit a solo shot deep over the centerfield wall for his first homer of the year. Hoffman and Spina provided 2-run singles and Hirt beat out an infield single for the eighth run.

Medaille got three back in the fourth inning and took a 9-8 lead with six runs in the fifth.

The Redhawks took control in the seventh inning. Quahliero got things started with a one-out single and stolen base. A Hoffman single up the middle scored Quahliero and Hoffman scored on a Spina triple to right field. Professori made it 11-9 with an RBI single to left.

Melendez and Quahliero added RBIs in the eighth and the Redhawks held on for a 13-11 win.

Spina, Hoffman and Hirt each hit in three. Melendez, Quahliero, and Hoffman scored three runs apiece.

Emrich improved to 2-0 and Sauer earned his first save.
