#21 Marietta Tops #25 La Roche in Ten Innings

MARIETTA, OH -- #25 La Roche College overcame a three run deficit to force extra frames, before falling in ten innings to #21 Marietta 7-6.

Dylan Urban kept the first inning alive with a single and scored on an error in the outfield. Starting pitcher, Regis Sauer, struck out three in the opening frame. Marietta had been threatening with runners on second and third but Sauer caught the Pioneers looking at a called third strike.

Elmo Trickett and Austin Hoffman reached to start the second inning. Marietta got the next two batters to strike out, but La Roche's two-out hitting came through again. Jonathan Spina lined the first pitch into centerfield for a 2-0 Redhawk lead.

Sauer sent the Pioneers down in order in the bottom of the second inning.

The Redhawks were held without a run in the third and fourth innings while Marietta got on the board. A double steal led to a Pioneer run in the third and an error let them tie it at 2-2 in the fourth.

The game remained tied after the fifth inning, with each team scoring a run. Urban singled home Spina in the top of the inning while a fielder's choice tied it for Marietta. Sauer limited the damage, striking out the final two batters with men on first and second base.

The Redhawks stranded runners at first and third in the sixth and Marietta took a 5-3 lead with a pair of unearned runs. The Pioneers added another in the seventh on an infield single.

La Roche rallied in the top of the eighth. Jay Novak, Trickett, and Hoffman reached base. Christian Hurt dragged a bunt up the first base line to score Novak and Trickett advanced home on a Gino Quahliero bunt. Spina tied it at 6-6, beating out an infield single to score Hoffman.

Relief pitcher Nick Tunstall left a man at second base in the eighth inning and Garren Telesz tossed a perfect ninth inning.

The game entered extras, but Marietta walked it off in the tenth.

Spina hit in two and Trickett scored twice. Sauer struck out ten in five innings.
